About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Swansea, Massachusetts, Continent Bakery stands as a beloved local gem for bakery aficionados and food lovers alike. Located at 198 Pinehurst Ave, this bakery offers an authentic and warm experience that has resonated deeply with the community for years. While it’s a relatively cozy spot — often bustling with a steady line of devoted customers — it’s exactly this popularity that speaks volumes about the quality and authenticity of their offerings.

Continent Bakery is renowned for its exquisite blend of traditional pastries and savory delights, expertly crafted every day with fresh ingredients. If you have a sweet tooth, the cannoli here promises a heavenly balance of crisp pastry and rich, creamy filling that melts on your tongue. The chocolate cream pie is a decadent masterpiece, with smooth, velvety chocolate paired perfectly with a buttery crust. Another standout treat is the Kürtőskalács — a Hungarian chimney cake that offers a unique, lightly caramelized exterior and a soft, fluffy inside, creating a mouthwatering sensory experience that is as rare as it is delightful in this region.

Beyond sweets, Continent Bakery is also famed for savory specialties such as their celebrated meat and salmon pies. These hearty offerings have garnered loyal followers who travel from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island just to savor their flavorful, perfectly baked pies. The bakery’s dedication to authentic Portuguese recipes shines throughout their menu, offering a taste of tradition with every bite.

Customers repeatedly praise not only the quality of the food but also the friendly and efficient service by the bakery staff. As one regular points out, “The girls behind the counter are friendly, helpful and efficient,” which adds a welcoming warmth to the overall experience. It's clear this isn’t just a place to pick up pastries—it’s a slice of community where smiles and genuine care make an impact as memorable as the food itself.

While longtime patrons lament the bakery’s seasonal closures — as the owners spend significant time in Portugal — the anticipation of their reopening only fuels the excitement. One customer fondly recalls, “My husband has been going here ever since he was born and he thinks it’s the best bakery in the whole world,” a testament to how deeply Continent Bakery is woven into local family traditions.

In essence, Continent Bakery is more than just a bakery. It is a vibrant embodiment of craftsmanship, heritage, and heartfelt service. Whether you come for their signature cannoli, crave the comforting embrace of their meat pies, or simply want to bask in the authentic atmosphere, this bakery promises a culinary journey that’s truly unforgettable.

Note: To avoid disappointment, it’s wise to check ahead regarding their hours, especially during their Portugal visits — but trust that the wait and their return are well worth it.

Loved the bakery for years!! Best meat and salmon pies in the Massachusetts and Rhode Island area. Too bad they have apparently gone out of business.

Unfortunately I can’t eat a single thing here because I have celiac disease and allergic to pork. But my husband has been going here ever since he was born and he thinks it’s the best bakery in the whole world. It has a very authentic feel. They go home to Portugal for a good chunk of the year, so just make sure that it’s open before you drive. But I actually respect the fact that they have a balance between their professional life and their personal life. We make sure to stop and get my husband a special treat every time we’re in town.

The baked goods are delicious and reasonably priced. The girls behind the counter are friendly, helpful and efficient. You know it's good because there's always a line. We travel 45 minutes just for their sweet bread, donuts, pastries, meat pies and sandwiches.

Excellent local bakery. Large assortment of hand cooked food, prepared subs, cakes, sweet bread. The only downside is it's small and get's packed. Get there early.
